PARTNERSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCES 2008 SERVICE TO AMERICA MEDAL FINALISTS
WASHINGTON – The Partnership for Public Service today announced the 29 Service to America Medal finalists – outstanding federal workers who are making high-impact contributions critical to the safety, health and well-being of Americans.
The 29 finalists were honored on Capitol Hill this morning and are contenders for 8 prestigious Service to America Medals, including Federal Employee of the Year, set to be presented on September 16 at a Washington, D.C. black-tie gala. The Service to America Medals have earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious awards dedicated to celebrating America’s civil servants.
“The Service to America Medals are important because they tell the true stories of the remarkable work that our federal employees do each and every day. There is not a day that passes where government does not touch our lives in some way – whether it is securing our homeland, or conducting cutting edge research to cure disease,” said Max Stier, Partnership for Public Service President.
This year’s finalists include federal workers who boast achievements in scientific research; renewable energy; consumer protection; health care; tsunami warning; refugee resettlement; malaria prevention; environmental conservation; human rights; foreign affairs; disaster relief; and border enforcement.
Seventeen of the medal contenders are from the Washington, D.C. metro area; others hail from San Francisco, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, El Paso, Boulder, Seattle and towns in Maryland, Virginia, California, Mississippi, Alabama and Montana. One finalist lives and works in Jerusalem, Israel.
The finalists work at the Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Justice, Health and Human Services, State, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security; the Food and Drug Administration; NASA; the Federal Trade Commission; the National Institutes of Health; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; the General Services Administration; the National Park Service; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; the EPA; the Government Accountability Office; National Institute of Standards and Technology; and the Air Force and Army.
A list of the 29 Service to America Medal finalists is attached. Profiles of each finalist’s accomplishments are available at www.servicetoamericamedals.org.
The Service to America Medals program honors the best in our federal workforce and works to inspire a new generation to consider public service careers by sharing the inspiring stories of unsung heroes with the general public. Surveys show that many Americans do not know what the federal government does for them each and every day – or the fact that there are federal jobs available in practically every interest and skill area, in all 50 states and around the world.
