PRIVATE SECTOR COUNCIL TO HONOR 2006 LEADERSHIP AWARD WINNERS
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Jane Harman (D-CA) and Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO Robert Stevens will be honored by the Partnership for Public Service's Private Sector Council for their efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the federal government.
The Leadership Awards, among the most prestigious honors for proponents of effective government, will be given to recipients Harman and Stevens at the 21st Annual Private Sector Council Leadership Awards dinner on April 25, 2006 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Albert R. Hunt, Executive Editor of Bloomberg News in Washington, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Representative Jane Harman, the Ranking Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and Member of the Homeland Security Committee, has played a key role in improving how the federal government works, particularly in the critical areas of intelligence, national defense and homeland security. She was one of the leading architects of broad intelligence reform legislation, which the President signed into law in December 2004, to modernize and integrate intelligence collection and analysis efforts, unify counter-terrorism efforts, and promote better information sharing within the intelligence community.
“I've devoted many years in Congress to security issues and I am honored to be recognized by the Partnership for Public Service's Private Sector Council for my efforts to help the federal government work harder and smarter to defend against threats to our country,” said Rep. Jane Harman.
“Throughout her public sector career and as a Member of Congress, Representative Harman has sought out smart solutions to some of the government's toughest challenges,” said Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service. “Through her efforts to help enact the most sweeping and comprehensive intelligence reforms in fifty years, she has transformed the way the United States is fighting the war on terror.”
As an accomplished business leader, Robert Stevens has made many contributions to the advancement of the federal civil service, including service on President Bush's Commission to Examine the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, and Board membership on the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
“Government works best when it can benefit from the leadership and experiences of all sectors,” said Howard Weizmann, president of the Private Sector Council. “Robert Stevens is using the expertise he has gained leading one of America's corporate innovators to help the government work smarter and compete more effectively in the global marketplace.”
Stevens said, “I'm deeply honored to be a recipient of this year's Leadership Award from the Partnership for Public Service's Private Sector Council. We at Lockheed Martin are proud to play a role in advancing the noble work of our federal government through public/private sector cooperation.”
Past Leadership Award recipients include Vice President Cheney; U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.); U.S. Senator George Voinovich (R-Ohio); Carly Fiorina, former President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Company; and Bob Nardelli, CEO of The Home Depot.
The nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service was established in 2001 to improve government performance by transforming the way government works and inspiring a new generation of Americans to enter government service. In early 2005, the Partnership merged with the nonprofit Private Sector Council, which works to improve the efficiency, innovation and management practices of the federal government through a cooperative sharing of knowledge between the public and private sectors.
