THIRTY OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVANTS NAMED 2006 SERVICE TO AMERICA MEDAL FINALISTS

Finalists Hail from 14 Different States, 22 Different Federal Agencies; Honored on Capitol Hill

Washington, D.C. — Thirty outstanding public servants from across the country were honored today as finalists for the prestigious 2006 Service to America Medals at a Capitol Hill Tribute Breakfast.
The list of honorees ranges from a renowned CDC doctor preparing the world for a possible flu pandemic to a top optometrist at the Department of Veterans Affairs who has proven nutritional supplements can prevent and even cure age-related vision loss; and from a Department of Defense employee leading the military’s personnel recovery efforts that have rescued more than 1,000 people in Iraq and Afghanistan to a U.S. Postal Service manager who led the quick and full recovery of mail service in the region surrounding Gulfport, MS after Hurricane Katrina.

The 30 finalists hail from 14 different states — Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Louisiana, Georgia, New York, Florida, Illinois, California, Virginia, Missouri and Pennsylvania, along with Washington, D.C. One finalist is currently on assignment in Afghanistan and another is in India.

The Service to America Medals is a national awards program created to honor the finest achievements of America’s federal employees. From among the 30 finalists, nine individuals will be selected and recognized on September 27th at a black-tie ceremony in Washington, D.C. Medal categories include Career Achievement; Call to Service; Homeland Security; International Affairs; Justice and Law Enforcement; National Security; Science and Environment; and Citizen Services, and in addition, a Federal Employee of the Year is named. The selection committee includes prominent public figures such as Stanford President John Hennessy, Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher, AOL Vice Chairman Ted Leonsis, and former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson.

The Service to America Medals were created in 2002 by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service and Atlantic Media Company, publisher of The Atlantic, National Journal and Government Executive magazines.  The Partnership for Public Service was established in 2001 to revitalize our federal government by inspiring a new generation to serve and by transforming the way government works.
