Federal Advisor Certificate Program

The Partnership for Public Service is proud to announce the debut of its Federal Advisor Certificate program. This program is designed to provide advisors with a comprehensive view of how to:

  • Advise students on federal opportunities
  • Build agency relationships
  • Promote federal service on campus

This is a great professional development opportunity for those interested in effectively providing the latest and greatest information, as well as job search strategies to students interested in public sector careers.

Requirements and Program Content

To receive a Partnership for Public Service Federal Advisor Certificate, advisors must demonstrate a commitment to promoting public service opportunities by:

  • Gaining a command of federal hiring process and opportunities
  • Demonstrating active promotion of these opportunities on campus
  • Establishing the capability and commitment to building agency relationships.

To obtain the certificate, each participant must complete all events in the following three areas.

VIRTUAL FEDERAL ADVISOR TRAINING SERIES

Through interactive webinars, participants will gain a better understanding of the federal hiring process, learn how to advise students on federal opportunities and build meaningful agency relationships.

The next Virtual Federal Advisor Training session will be held in June 2013. Registration for the series will open in late April 2013.

Advising Students on Federal Opportunities
Learn how to navigate the federal hiring process and learn more about student programs, where the jobs are and the federal application process.

Campus Sustainability
Discuss ways to promote federal service in cost-effective and sustainable ways by involving the whole campus community and building off what has worked at other campuses.

Building Agency Relationships
Identify best practices for building agency relationships by leveraging existing college or university relationships and strategically developing new long-term relationships.

FEDERAL ADVISOR STRATEGY PACKAGE

This new programming will connect campuses with agencies and explore topics such as student opportunities in federal service, hiring trends at federal agencies and mission-critical positions.

The next Federal Advisor Strategy Package will begin in Fall 2013. Registration for the series will open in August 2013.

Virtual Summit I: The New Pathways Programs
Dec. 5, 2012, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EST
Don’t miss this chance to make connections with agency representatives while gaining insight on the changing federal landscape and hiring reform. With the new Pathways Programs in effect, this interactive summit will allow a select number of college and university representatives to interact directly with agencies regarding their use of the Pathways Programs in recruiting for internships and entry-level positions.

Virtual Summit II: Government Careers in Mission-Critical Fields
Feb. 7, 2013, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST
Government agencies cannot achieve their missions without the right talent. During this summit, Partnership staff will facilitate a discussion about federal agencies’ mission-critical talent needs and the variety of ways agencies get this talent in the door. Agency representatives will be on the line to discuss their strategies for attracting mission-critical talent and their top tips for students and jobseekers interested in federal positions.

One-Hour Strategy Sessions
An individualized one-hour strategy session with Partnership staff about how to build agency relationships and create a sustainable federal service campaign on campus.

Dates and times of the strategy sessions are determined on a first come first serve basis.

GO GOVERNMENT WEBINAR SERIES

This webinar series provides career services professionals with convenient webinars to show to students and alumni looking for federal opportunities.

Landing your Dream Job or Internship
Feb. 5, 2013, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST
This webinar is for studentsinterested in finding and applyingfor federal internships and jobs, as well as those advisors looking for more information about federal opportunities to share with their students. During this session, we will highlight a number of exciting internships and jobs across government, and show your students how to research, find and apply for an internship or job that is right for them.

What Happens After My Application is Submitted?
March 20, 2013, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EST
The federal application process does not end when you press submit on USAJOBS.gov. During this webinar, we will discuss what students and jobseekers can expect in the next stages of the application process. From essays to interviews to security clearances, Partnership staff and agency experts will discuss how to stand out after your resume has been submitted.

Securing Federal Employment Abroad
April 11, 2013, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. EST
Want to see the world while serving your country? Join us for a discussion about the mission- critical, international positions in the government. Participants will hear from agency representatives and Partnership staff on a variety of international opportunities and how applicants can leverage language and technology skills to secure a coveted position abroad.

Cost of Trainings

Purchase all events in the three areas required to obtain the Federal Advisor Certificate for $534.00. If you do not wish to purchase all events, each of the three areas can be purchased individually.

Registration

  • Registration for the next Virtual Federal Advisor Training Series will open in April 2013
  • Registration for the next Federal Advisor Strategy Package will open in Fall 2013

Certificate Terms

After successful completion all required training, the certificate is valid for four years. The certificate can be renewed after four years by attending a Virtual Federal Advisor Training.

For those pursuing the certificate from the same school, each advisor must complete the virtual training (separate registrations) and complete the Go Government Webinar Series in different semesters. They are permitted to participate jointly in the Federal Advisor Strategy Package programming for credit towards the certification.

Retroactive Qualification

The Partnership is not able to offer retroactive credit towards a certificate for those who have completed a Federal Advisor Training prior to Nov. 13, 2012 or a Go Government Webinar Series prior to Feb. 5, 2013.
